Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
